Graduation Roxbury  SFK Art Roxbury Graduation

Boston, home to the oldest public school system in the U.S, is faced with issues of bullying in schools, youth homicide, gang violence, and juvenile assaults. It is reported that 71% of students live in poverty. A large percentage of kids spend less than 20% of their time in school, and a shocking 42% of Massachusetts’ school-age children are taking care of themselves after school. Despite numerous afterschool programs, many Boston area youth 'age out' of traditional programs, lose interest or are under increased pressure to improve academically or find employment. It is evident that children and youth in and around Boston are continuously exposed to a wide and increasing range of risk factors. Most are growing up with little or no positive role models, guidance or supervision.

There is a tremendous need in Boston for a program that teaches children self-awareness and resiliency. SFK’s unique Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program guides children with emotional intelligence, problem solving, interpersonal skills and self-esteem. Academic success requires excellent problem-solving and critical thinking ability, all of which are core to SEL programs. The National Center for Education and the Economy warns communities across the US to either reinvent schooling and better prepare students for the 21st century, or face a future of limited opportunity for the nation’s young people. Social Emotional Learning is the missing piece that allows students to be successful, not only by improving their academics but also by becoming successful individuals and members of the community. SFK Boston is set to bring SFK’s mature, proven, standard, and comprehensive SEL program, to every child in Boston and Massachusetts.

One reactive behavior I would like to stop now is saying "I'm bored".

SFK at the Yawkey Boys and Girls Club in Roxbury

The present economy has parents working longer hours to make ends meet. This leaves children, especially from single-parent households, at risk for increased amounts of unsupervised and unstructured time. The power of the partnership between SFK and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston is that each week youth have the opportunity to grow as young people by learning valuable life skills in a fun environment rather than simply being home alone or passing time in front of a television.

I like SFK because it teaches me how to stop reactive behaviors and handle it in a different way like just letting go of what happened. It also teaches me that I can have uninterrupted happiness if I listen to the good guy and lower the [voice of the] opponent. It also taught me

The most amazing thing I learned in SFK is putting yourself in someone else’s shoes because I could learn something from them and become friends with them. Thank you Karen for starting SFK because once SFK class ends I can use it in reality. I am now committed to trying to stop being angry.

The most amazing thing I learned in SFK is not to be always angry and get my anger out. A caring and sharing thing I would like to do is to help kids with their problems. And to not do things in a mad way.

I learned a lot in SFK, because today I did not want to do my work and I turned down[the voice of ] the opponent and put up [the voice of] the good guy. So I stopped fooling around and did my homework. I felt happy about what I did.

The most amazing thing I learned in SFK so far is that I know not to listen to the opponent but the voice that encourages me to do the right thing. Thank you a lot because everyone has helped me learn how to control my temper because my temper can be "atrotious". There is no need for reactive behavior.
