Despite the rich natural resources, rapid economic development, and the overall size of Brazil’s economy, the nation has major problems with poverty, hunger, disease, and inadequate public services.

Poverty in Brazil is most visually represented by the various favelas, slums in the country's metropolitan areas and remote upcountry regions that suffer with economic underdevelopment and below-par standards of living.

Due to the extreme conditions that Brazilian children face every day, there is a need for Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs to support them in their efforts to overcome challenges. As an SEL Program SFK provides children with life skills and universal tools that help them make better choices in the face of adversity, thereby helping them reach their full potential. After completing SFK, it has been reported that children also have an increased sense of responsibility for their behavior and more tolerance towards others. Brazil is one of SFK’s newer locations. They started a pilot program in 2008 reaching 550 children and hired their first fulltime teacher in August of 2009 to serve its expanding needs

It's been very rewarding to teach SFK in Brazil.

Kids have been absolutely open to the concepts, games and activities. We (facilitators and I) are learning a lot with the students and it seems their parents are also learning, as when we meet parents mention the Good Guy, Opponent and Uninterrupted Happiness, as if they had attended the classes. What really impresses me is how much most of them have changed after five classes.  Ruymara Teixeira de Almeida (Lead Teacher)

Being an SFK teacher has been one of the best experiences in my life!

Being an SFK teacher has been one of the best experiences in my life! The training process was already a really big challenge: leaving my 11 year-old daughter and my recently-widowed mum in Brazil, taking a leave from my current jobs and staying abroad for three months learning about SFK was not as easy as I believed it was going to be!  This is mainly because we were not learning how to teach a regular school subject, but at SFK classes we teach concepts like: human dignity, tolerance, caring, sharing, unity, cause and effect among many others. Besides that, there is the fact that we were mainly learning how to LIVE these concepts! We compared this process as being in a washing machine cycle...

SFK is teaching me a lot

I used to be a very irritated, nervous person. In the first classes, I've cried, put things away, it helps me change my feelings, have another behaviour. It helped me to be patient, to find a job. It helped me to help people, I leave the classes and reflect about what I've learned. It makes me feel good. Helps us communicate better. And changes the behaviour a lot.  Cristiane (Lua Nova Student)

These classes are wonderful for any child

I'm Amanda and Bruna's mother. I'd like to share my joy in seeing them participating of SFK classes. I have no doubts that all they are experiencing will be present in their whole lives. The classes are wonderful for any child, it's preventive, clarifying, for the present and for a better future!!!  Liat, mother of 2 kids in a Donation Based group
