SFK London was established in 2005 and by 2006 started to work within curriculum time in London schools. SFK now teaches pupils in years 3, 4, 5, & 6 at primary schools in London. This forms part of the classroom time allocated to PSHE (Personal Social & Health Education). We also provide some classes in secondary schools.

Social and emotional issues among children and young people have profound ramifications in the UK. In 2007, the Prince’s Trust found that youth unemployment costs this country approximately £70m per week in lost economic productivity and job seeker’s allowance. According to their estimates, the total cost of youth crime in Great Britain was in excess of £1 billion in 2004. Essentially, too many young people lack confidence, direction, feel disconnected from the community, and have negative belief systems and we believe it is this which leads to serious social problems.

At present we are teaching SFK in 15 schools located in the London boroughs of Newham, Westminster and Southwark. This year (academic year 2009/10) we will teach 50 courses and 1,374 children.

Our courses are highly relevant in London. Recent studies, including the 2009 Index Of Child Well Being, found that in areas SFK teaches there are particular challenges with economic and social deprivation, crime and child well-being. By helping children learn to direct their own futures through positive choices, to foster strong relationships and to make focused effort, SFK equips children with tools to attain greater happiness and success in life.

We build long-term relationships with schools in order to make a sustained contribution to communities in need. The schools where we work report very favourably on our effectiveness in helping children and often refer us on to other local schools.

We have three full-time teachers and benefit from the help of 70 active volunteers.

Testimonial from Ms. Allison Helm, Curwen Primary School

I am writing on behalf of all of our staff to acknowledge and applaud the fantastic work that Marcus [SFK Teacher] and his team have undertaken in our school this year. SFK came highly recommended from a fellow primary school due to the positive impact it was having on its children’s social and moral development, and as such we invited SFK to work with our children each week for the past two terms.

Letter from House Principal of Westminster Academy

To whom it may concern,

In September 2007, we engaged the services of SFK to help us close a gap in our Year 7 curriculum that we’d identified. Our curriculum review at the end of July 2007 had identified a deficiency in the amount of PSHE we were delivering to Year 7. We were also looking at a way in which we could encourage students to settle disputes in a more peaceful and constructive manner.

Letter from Headteacher of Queens Park Primary School

Dear SFK,

As you are aware, the local community within our school’s natural catchment area is both culturally and ethnically diverse and also in a state of constant flux, as new communities seek refuge. Over the years, this has included Iraqis, Kurds, Bosnians, Albanians and people from Afghanistan. We are proud that our intake reflects the full breadth of the wider community. Over 80% of the children speak English and an additional language. 20% of the pupils have refugee status, and approximately 60% are eligible for free school meals.
