Program Director, Los Angeles

Overall Responsibilities

Oversee the coordination, administration, and delivery of the SFK program in Los Angeles including, planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling program activities, ensuring all program activities are in accordance with SFK’s mission and goals.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Overall program:
    • Oversee the planning, organization, implementation and monitoring of SFK program in Los Angeles
    • Develop and execute strategic plan for the Los Angeles site based on Global SFK strategic plan – with approval from President
    • Prepare and submit weekly/monthly/ quarterly monitoring and program reports to SFK Global
    • Meet weekly with President to provide frequent, consistent and regular updates on all program activities
    • Liaison with SFK Global Legal Department on all issues regarding contracting
  • Staff oversight:
    • Oversees all staff including Lead Teacher, Volunteer Coordinator, etc.  Create a positive environment of motivation and collaboration
    • Supervise and provide support and direction to local staff including on-going professional development, e.g. coaching, mentoring, training
    • Implement performance evaluations (once process is put in place with SFK Global – all sites will follow same policy for performance evaluations.  Results will be submitted to SFK Global Human Resources)
    • Organize and facilitate weekly staff and program meetings
    • Supervise the creation and maintenance of all work plans.  Ensure targets and goals are met
    • Document and update all policies and procedures
  • Human Resources:
    • Update and revise all Los Angeles based staff job descriptions and review on an on-going basis with SFK Global Human Resources and President
    • Liaison with SFK Global Human Resources to consistently evaluate staff performance and communicate staff needs/desires
    • Advise Human Resources on any and all staffing needs.  Recruit, hire and train new staff members.  Recruitment to be done by PD in consultation with SFK Global
    • Oversee annual salary increases
  • Financial management:
    • Prepare, review and update SFK Los Angeles program and operation budget.  Ensure the program operates within an approved budget
    • Budget is to be approved by President and SFK Global Accounting
    • Create and submit monthly/quarterly and annual budget to reflect “actuals” to President and Accounting.  Review monthly/quarterly and annually to ensure on budget and on target
    • Conduct an annual financial review/evaluation with SFK Global Accounting and President
    • Review and approve all activity and budget authorization
    • Manage petty cash
    • Consistently monitor and evaluate the budget and make updates/adjustments accordingly
  • Program oversight:
    • Secure placement for SFK curriculum in Los Angeles schools
    • Plans and schedules classes with Principal and Lead Teacher
    • Review and complete all MOUs and submit to SFK Global Legal department for review and approval
    • Maintains relationships with each site and conducts year-end evaluation meeting with principals
    • Evaluate strengths of the program and identify areas for improvement consistently with Los Angeles staff (with Lead Teacher daily and weekly)
    • Weekly meetings with Lead Teacher and oversees quality and delivery of curriculum in classrooms with Lead Teacher
    • Attend monthly Global Educational Team conference call
    • Must consult with Global Educational Team b efore making decisions which have any educational impact
    • Work with Global Educational Team to oversee, implement and supervise program monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system (once M&E system is developed and implemented).  Document all program achievements and lessons learned as part of M&E system
    • Develop forms and records to document program activities including ensuring student registration forms are filled out and in database
    • Approve, supervise and monitor visitors to programs, e.g. donors, volunteers, etc
    • Create, produce and monitor regular community awareness and special events.  Work closely with volunteer Event Chairs on fundraising strategies and execution
  • External Relations:
    • Initiate, establish and maintain alliances and relationships with local government officials, businesses, schools, organizations, community centers and members, like-minded foundations etc – all relevant organizations and institutions.  Communicate to gain support, create partnerships and solicit input to improve the program
    • Represent SFK in Los Angeles  as spokesperson with stakeholders and media with SFK Global approval (from President)
    • Participate in media training to be able to speak “on message” about SFK
    • Coordinate and oversee production of marketing materials and ensures the positioning is in alignment with SFK brand with supervision from SFK Global
    • Manage submissions to Global for quarterly newsletter and SFK Annual Report
    • Oversee procurement of letters of recommendation and testimonials from partner organizations, schools, etc
  • Fundraising/Resource Mobilization
    • Collaborate with Global Director of Development (DOD) to assist in identifying key Los Angeles based donors and seek out grant opportunities. Liaison with DOD to help with creating tailored proposals for resource mobilization
    • Create fundraising target for Los Angeles site, ensure this is in accordance with overall SFK Global budget
    • Lead and liaison with Advisory Board to ensure fundraising strategy has been developed, is in place and funds are being secured (once Advisory Board is in place)

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of strong management experience and proven management and leadership skills
  • Experience in developing and managing teams
  • Ability to manage, delegate work and authority to, coach, counsel, train and develop staff
  • Experience in managing projects from an oversight perspective (not just executing projects)
  • Strong organization skills; proven ability to multi-task
  • Understanding of organizational dynamics and how organizations work (or don’t work) and how they grow and change
  • Ability to implement changes through influence, negotiation and persuasion
  • Superb written and spoken communications skills
  • Proficient meeting management skills and experienced presenter
  • A natural leader, politically astute with excellent social skills
  • Self-starter who can work independently
  • Strong sense of teamwork and collaboration
  • Ability to think critically and independently
  • General interest and dedication to the mission of SFK
  • Fundraising experience is a plus
  • Experience in education a plus and knowledge of local educational system
  • Bilingual Spanish-speaking is a plus
