Volunteer Spotlight: Raquel Alvarado, Panama

Raquel Alvarado has been an active volunteer for SFK since March of 2009. She has worked as a classroom assistant, and has helped with organizing materials, SFK camp and other activities throughout the year. In her free time she enjoys dancing salsa, going to the gym, going to the beach and taking care of her family. Her favorite quote is: "When you are at peace with yourself, everything that surrounds you will also be at peace."
What prompted you to volunteer for SFK?
My daughter told me about the organization and then I saw the website and fell in love with the program.
What inspires you and keeps you volunteering with SFK?
I love to help people and kids. When I see changes in them after they go through the classes it is really fantastic. It’s the best job or thing I can be doing in this moment of my life.
Why do you think it’s important to volunteer with SFK?
The world and the people in it need moral values and the best way is to begin is with kids.
What is your top memorable experience volunteering with SFK?
Watching the process of a boy who was a gang member get to the point where he realized that he had a good voice inside of him.
What have you learned from being an SFK volunteer?
I have learned that the more I give the more I receive.
