Sasha’s Story Will Stay With You

There are moments in this work that leave a lasting imprint on my heart, moments that remind me, beyond any doubt, why we do what we do.

One of those moments happened in a Year 6 classroom in Baku, Azerbaijan.

A young boy named Sasha, who fled Ukraine with his family just two months ago because of the war, has been struggling. He is afraid of the dark, afraid of being alone, and he carries memories no child should ever have to carry.

During SFK Class #3 of Winning in the Game of Life, the lesson on the Light, where children learn about physical light as an analogy for the inner light we all hold, Sasha shared something that shook the whole room.

He said quietly to his teacher:

“During the war, the Russians didn’t show their Light to people… they wanted to kill us.”

The teacher replied with tenderness,

“Then let us be the example.”

She gave Sasha a flashlight and held one herself. Then she turned off the classroom lights.

The two of them stood facing one another. Sasha turned on his light. The teacher followed, turning on hers.

She asked gently,

“When we do this… what happens?”

He watched their two beams of light meet in the dark. Then he whispered,

“It means that we love each other.”

And he stepped forward and hugged her tightly.

This is the impact of an SFK Facilitator:
They don’t simply deliver a lesson. They create a safe space. They help a wounded heart take its first brave step toward healing. They remind a child that their Light is still there, untouched, unbroken, waiting to shine.

Stories like Sasha’s are sacred reminders of our mission.

This Giving Tuesday, on December 2, I invite you to stand with us to empower more teachers, reach more children, and help heal more hearts, one child at a time.

Your support makes this work possible.

Help Us Keep Making an Impact

Help Us Keep Making an Impact

Every gift to SFK helps light the way for children worldwide. Your support makes it possible to bring social-emotional and spiritual education to kids who might otherwise never have access to these tools. Because of you, we can train educators, translate programs, create new resources, and expand our reach to communities most in need-helping children discover their inner Light and navigate life with courage, compassion, and wisdom.

Together, we can continue to empower the next generation to navigate life with confidence, compassion, and purpose.
