Activities

Dear Parents and Educators,

We are delighted to share this collection of activities inspired by L.B. Discovering the Inner Light.

Each activity is thoughtfully designed to foster emotional intelligence, resilience, and kindness. Whether used at home, in the classroom, or as part of a group workshop, these exercises offer children the opportunity to explore their feelings, build confidence, and practice being present.

We hope these activities support your child’s growth and spark deeper conversations and shared moments of connection.

Thank you for being a guiding presence as children learn to shine their unique Light into the world.

What Are Lightning Bugs?

Lightning bugs, also called fireflies, are small insects that light up at night. They are actually beetles, not flies! They use a special chemical reaction in their bodies to glow, creating tiny lights in the dark.

Why Do They Glow?

Lightning bugs glow because of a process called bioluminescence. They make their own light by mixing chemicals inside their bodies. This glowing helps them:

Talk to Each Other – Fireflies use their blinking lights to send messages and find mates.

Stay Safe – Some fireflies flash to warn predators that they taste bad.

Where Can You Find Them?

Fireflies love warm, humid places like meadows, forests, and gardens.

They often come out in the summer after sunset when the air is cool.

Fun Facts

  • Fireflies don’t get hot when they light up – their glow is called cold light.
  • Some fireflies blink in patterns, like Morse code!
  • Baby fireflies (larvae) also glow and live underground before turning into adult fireflies.

Can You Catch a Firefly?

Yes! If you want to catch a firefly, do it gently:

Use your hands or a jar with holes in the lid so they can breathe. Watch them glow, and then let them go back into nature.

Fireflies are magical little creatures that make summer nights sparkle. Watching them can remind us of the wonder and beauty of nature!

Reflection Questions

These questions are designed to gently help your child open up and make meaningful connections between the story’s messages and their own life experiences.

L.B. was curious about who she was and why she was here. Close your eyes and think about something that makes you wonder. Is it about yourself, life, or the universe? Write or draw your thoughts; answers are not needed.

When the butterfly told L.B. she had something special inside, it made her wonder about her unique qualities. Imagine a friend is telling you something amazing about yourself. How does that make you feel? Now, think about what makes YOU special. Draw or list three things you love about yourself.

L.B. realized she had a Light inside her that helped her feel brave, calm, and happy. Picture a warm, glowing light inside of you. How does it make you feel? Does it change how you see yourself or others? Write about a time you felt your Light shining.

L.B. learned to close her eyes, take a deep breath, and feel her Light when she needed help or felt big emotions. Take three deep breaths. What do you notice? Do you feel warmth, calmness, or energy inside you? Write or draw what your Light feels like.

L.B. discovered it was her Light that helped her to be brave, calm, and kind. Think of a time when you felt scared or upset. How could your Light help you in that moment? Write about how you can connect with your Light the next time you need it.

L.B. shared the message of the Light with others. Imagine you are writing a letter or making a card for someone to remind them of their Light. What would you say? Draw or write a message to encourage someone you care about.
